Publishing your work and sharing your findings is a key component of a successful research career. Recently most research funders started to request that everything they are supporting to be published open access and publishers are offering various alternatives to meet this requirement. In this rapidly changing landscape, it is very easy to get confused between Green and Gold or Bronze and Platinum Open Access publishing models. Add on top some Creative Commons licenses and the confusion is complete. This session is intended to explain the relationship between copyright, Creative Commons licenses and Open Access and how authors can navigate the publishing process meeting all their funder’s requirements, ensuring maximum impact and visibility of their research while not breaking the law (nor the bank).

At the end of this session participants will have:

  • an understanding of the publishing models and what is expected from the authors
  • an understanding of open access, creative commons licenses and copyright and how this applies to scholarly communications

Learning Objectives

  • Appreciate the importance of active learning in developing a flipped classroom.
  • Opportunity to discuss the different approaches to implement a flipped classroom.

Description

The idea of a flipped classroom has become very popular, as a way to change the passive learning approach of traditional lectures.

In general terms, a flipped classroom is where students review the lecture content beforehand, and engage in a discussion of the topic during the timetabled lecture. But arranging the experience so that students can engage in active learning during the lecture does take some organisation.

This workshop will discuss methods of implementing a flipped classroom, and give the participants a chance to use some of the technologies that can facilitate them.

Jane Desmond, Ph.D. is Professor of Anthropology and Affiliate Faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the U.S is visiting the University of Edinburgh and you are warmly invited to attend a presentation with the opportunity to ask questions. This is open to all colleagues and students.

“Access to Care” Debates:  from Economics to Ethics

In the U.S., the problem of differential access to veterinary care is increasingly recognized as a necessary subject of professional discussion, with impacts on veterinary practice and training. Debates center on the differences between “gold standard care,” i.e. the techniques and procedures taught in the 32 US Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, and an emerging set of protocols referred to as the more affordable “spectrum of care.”  In this talk, I ask what happens when we reframe these debates not primarily as solutions to economic problems but rather in a social justice framework. Should we conceive of health care for pets, as "part of the family," as a fundamental right, and/or obligation of the state or society?  What sorts of shifts in veterinary practice, clinic policies, training, and community relations might such a stance require? Can the “social determinants of health” model from human medicine be useful in this reimagining?

This VMED workshop will provide an opportunity to share and discuss teaching practices that can be implemented to decolonise and diversify the curriculum. In this session, Dr Sílvia Pérez-Espona and Dr Fiona Borthwick will provide different examples of teaching practices that they have already implemented in their teaching towards the decolonisation and diversification of the curriculum.

The online MSc programme ‘Global Food Security and Nutrition’ has created a programme specific approach to EDI to support its diverse student body. The programme director will share their experiences of the following:

  • Taking action when feeling uncertain
  • Code of conduct
  • Safe spaces for diverse groups’

Their presentations will then be followed by an open discussion to share practices and discuss further teaching activities that would help the decolonisation and diversification at R(D)SVS.

A Collaborate link will be emailed in advance of the session.

Why do students find it so difficult to apply the knowledge from earlier years when they come to clinical rotations? How can we help our learners integrate their prior knowledge, organise and retain information, and stay motivated? We will discuss how effective teaching is directly linked with being able to understand how students learn.

Intended learning outcomes

  1. Outline the main features of adult learning theories and how reflective practice and motivation apply to clinical teaching
  2. Define experiential learning and discuss why it is relevant in medical education
  3. Using the Bloom’s taxonomy and Miller’s pyramid, explain the difference between superficial and deep learning and its relevance for clinical education

The VMED team welcome you to join us for a discussion of an educational research paper relevant to teaching in the Vet School.

The aims of this journal club are to allow discussion on learning and teaching practice for colleagues who teach across the campus. It is a chance to share new research and innovations as well as discuss fundamental principles of learning and teaching such as assessment and feedback. All who are interested in teaching are welcome to attend.

This is an informal journal club discussion. The speaker will choose a paper the link to which will be sent round ahead of time, possibly with some questions to think about and then they will present a summary of the paper using slides if they choose and facilitate a discussion on the paper, its findings and limitations and how it may apply to our local context.

Details of the article will be emailed in advance.
